Elhadj Diop, a father who lost his daughter to malaria in 1999 and had other family members died from malaria, strived to end malaria in his community.
Mr. Diop, now 64, converted his grief into an unremitting campaign to banish malaria in his town of Thienaba Seck, Senegal. He quit his job, sold his belongings, walked hundreds of miles to convinced thousands of people - from politicians to village sanitation brigades - to collaborate and tackle malaria.
After almost two decades of effort, the disease was largely controlled. As a country, it's malaria mortality dropped by 40%, and morbidity dropped by 77% in the past 10 years. And thankfully to this, Mr. Diop's newly born granddaughter will enjoy love from her grandfather throughout her childhood.
Though this story is far away from us, it still reminds us that malaria is still not solved in some of the poorest African countries, and children are still dying from it.
